My Relationship with Holidays

Holidays are confusing. There are so many. They can be public, legal, commemorative, secular, religious or just made up. As I blog today, November 26, 2023, it’s International Cake Day as well as Anti-Obesity Day.
Holidays are confusing. There are so many. They can be public, legal, commemorative, secular, religious or just made up. As I blog today, November 26, 2023, it’s International Cake Day as well as Anti-Obesity Day.

Who decides this?

As a kid, I was only concerned with certain holidays.

1: Christmas, because if I was good, presents and a stocking full of candy.

2: Halloween, because if I was costumed, I’d get a bag full of candy.

3: Easter, because the search for a chocolate bunny and a basket full of candy.

4: Fourth of July, because along the parade route, they threw out candy.

Growing up there were never sweets in my house,

hence my sweet tooth anticipation for those holidays.

As a reluctant adult, my feelings for my top four have evolved.

If I want candy, I no longer have to wear a costume or wait for a parade.

I do hold on to the triumphant feeling of running back to the curb after

capturing a measly smashed peppermint or stale tootsie roll at the parade.

My Mother’s horrified reaction to my skinned, bloodied knees and knuckles,

instead of pride, always puzzled me.

We are in the thick of the holiday trifecta:

Thanksgiving = Gratitude

Christmas = Giving

New Years = Beginnings

Or

Over-Eating

Over-Spending

Over-Drinking

This season, I’ve tasked my awareness to alert me when any of the "Overs" take over.

I know all three will happen, but maybe less if I stop, breathe and notice.

This holiday season I will:

Say a prayer of gratitude before the holiday meal.

Remember to give to those less fortunate.

Begin the New Year with the intention of Love first.

Wishing you and yours peaceful holidays and the candy you love most!
