My Relationship with Quotes

"Let Go or be Dragged" is one of my favorite quotes.

I first heard these words not as a profound insight but

as I was learning to waterski.

"If you can't get up on the skis or you begin to fall,

just let go of the tow rope. Don't let it drag you!",

shouted all of the seasoned skiers.

For some unexplained reason, letting go is hard,

even when water is surging up your nostrils and

your arms are being pulled out of their sockets.

What was the fear of letting go?

The boat would speed away?

Another boat wouldn't see me and I'd be chopped up by the propeller?

I'd be left bobbing in shark infested waters and become fish food?

(I only water skied in lakes and rivers.)

Those fears were ridiculous and none ever came true,

with the exception of being stung by a jellyfish.

Back to my fridge...

Below and to the right of that quote are others

that I hope will magnetize into my psyche.

Since the average person opens her fridge around 22 times a day,

they should be affecting my life and behaviors.

I should be the most enlightened soul with

a sense of clarity, understanding and free from fear.

I'm not.

Then I spot the quote on my stove:

"Pray More, Worry Less"

Slowly my white knuckles receive some circulation and color.

It's a challenging process.

Who would've thought my kitchen appliances would serve as

silent mentors that motivate and inspire me.

I'm eyeing my toaster, do they make heat resistant magnets?

I learned quickly, to let go of the rope while I was on waterskis.

Holding on, well, it's a drag.
